Org Units in Dynamics 365 – Project Service Automation

Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 Project Service Automation has finally come off age. Not only do Services companies gain monetarily in terms of increased number of sold Proposals, they can mark off 2 more items from their checklists namely the reduction in process inefficiency and reduction in effort spent per proposal.

Organization Units are one of the first things that consultants focus on when setting up Project Service Automation in Dynamics 365. Every organization is different and Business Case around PSA set up is unique and requires a fresh perspective. Organization Units model that works for one customer may not work for others and a completely different Organization Units structure may be necessary.

Contrary to common perception, Organization Units are not related to Security Roles of Dynamics 365. Organizations Units are in fact a logical structure used for structuring an Organization’s staff or commercials. Thanks to the flexibility of Organizations Units, an Organization Unit could logically represent a department, a legal entity, a branch office , a group of staff members or a territory.

Organization Units must be related to a single Price List of Cost context, representing costs of inputs be it resources or other expenses. Which in layman term means allowing sections within the organization to manage their own costing when estimating project costs. Not only this, with a Price List that support Multi-currencies, it is possible for any section of organization to utilize a global staff or expense tracking.
